yesterday

It was sooooo cold yesterday and when I just looked out at my window thermometer this morning it read -8c!!!! I have new long johns to wear under my jeans but I hate being all bundled up like that!
See the little Rorstrand bowl above? Well, at the Fleamarket on Saturday I asked how much it was (in English) the seller discussed the price quietly in Norwegian with someone else when I heard them say(in Norwegian) that I was English so they would charge me £8, I said "no thanks" and then sent Henrik over to ask the price (in Norwegian) and they told him it was £1!!!! Xenophobia, me thinks!!! Its not the first time I have experienced crap like this since moving to Norway, just earlier that day I argued with a man over a parking space and he told me (in English) "Shooo,Shooo, get out of Norway!" Ho,hum, at least I got the bowl for £1!!!!

Today

It is seriously cold here now and the fjord is frozen (it was free flowin' on Friday, what a difference 2 days makes!) I'm still dressing like an English person so I'm freezing most of the time ( I did give in and bought the first pair of wellies I've owned since I was ten!) but Im gradually understanding the Norwegian saying "There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing!"
I made a big pan of White bean soup and we headed of to the beach and enjoyed the sunset. I will miss these days once we are both back at work......

Sunday

Apple and cinnamon pancakes for breakfast, a wander round Oslo and a visit to Birkelunden. I underestimated how cold it was today as our flat was so warm and I was freeeeezing cold so we came home and drank Glogg to defrost. Now we are warm and cozy, catching up on the new series of The Apprentice.

Oksenøya

When its cold and sunny here it seems a crime not to be out in it, so even if its freezing we still pack up a picnic and head to the beach (and managed to fit in a few early Flea Markets too!) Hope you are all having a great weekend!

Food we ate today

Wednesday, 3 November 2010

In London we ate a lot of hummus which was available everywhere but here in Norway we have struggled to find it and when we do its horrid, so today on a trip to Sweden I bought a lovely new food processor and whizzed up a delicious batch of our favourite dip (along with some flatbread cause the pitta bread is crap here too!)

Fleamarket finds

Im trying to be selective at fleamarkets these days, only buying stuff that makes sense but its hard to not just pick up any old things and store it for that day when we have a, um, big house!!
Latest must -have- buys are a child sized Aalto stool (£4) two brand new rugs (Im not in the market for 2nd hand rugs, way too germy, and too expensive to dry clean if they are wool) in a style that I would never have looked at six months ago but now Im here in Norway they just seem to fit. Last but not least is the Rorstrand salt pot bought for me by Elise at last weekends Fleamarket visit, which I love.
Happy November everyone!

Sunday, 31 October 2010

Inspired by Anna's post over at Door Sixteen I picked up a little Molger wall shelf from Ikea for above the kitchen table. I have not quite decided what is going to live on it yet (I usually move things around a lot before I make my mind up!)

These days breakfast is eaten in the dark..... Only 7 months til Summer!!!

Winter boots

Im desperate for them as my leather boots and converse are not quite up to scratch in this Nordic weather. They need to be waterproof, non slip and fur lined and I need to decide which of these three I want the most.... (duckfeet, snipe or the merrell Oslo)

******UPDATE**** I ordered the Merrell Oslo in the end, decided they would keep me warmer and dryer, ideally I'd buy them all though!!!

Beaches and bonfires

Oslo is blessed with many lovely beaches and we spent many hours grilling hot dogs, crabbing and toasting marshmallows on them this week (a naked man even appeared from the bushes and jumped in the fjord as we were about to bite into our hot dogs!) It has been the most perfect week with my friend and her amazing kids.

Today

Today we visited my friend Jasminka and her hubby in Lillestrøm and had a lovely lunch with them. Jasminka and I used to be good friends in London but she moved back to Croatia a few years back and now, strangely enough we have both ended up in Oslo. Small world eh?
That gorgeous dog is Embla who belongs to our lovely neighbours and visits us several times a day (usually looking for something to eat) she likes to rest her head on the work top as I cook, hoping for a little taste of whatever I'm making! Im now just working out what Im going to cook for the next few days as my best friend will be here this time tomorrow. So excited!
