cruel summer
I'm really feeling the need to escape Norway for a while. The weather is shockingly shite.
The food is annoying me (it always does when I've been to England) and I'm really ready for our holiday in Denmark (and Finland too, we just booked flights and an Airbnb flat yesterday!)
Tonight I made a yummy middle eastern inspired dinner. Some kind of thrown together persian stylie rice number with a fattoush salad which we stuffed ourselves silly with. Thank god I can cook because with the terrible food choices in this country I'd have slit my throat many months ago if I was not able to whip up anything other than kjeeeeeeeedelig norsk mat! (boring norwegian food)

UK weather hasn't been much better. I hope the sun shines for you in Denmark and Finland.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I hope so too!
DeleteWhat is the worst Norwegian dish for you? I've been to Norway a few times and I don't remember it being that bad.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to tell you that the Danish weather is no good either. Let's hope Finland can cheer you up :o)
The problem isn't so much being a visitor and eating at restaurants and cafes and perhaps at someone else's home. The problem is when you become a resident and are forced to shop at the same mediocre grocery stores day-in-and-day-out that you start to feel angry, disappointed, and frustrated. I hear the Danish grocery stores are far superior to Norwegian. Maybe if we entered the EU, the variety and quality would improve?
DeleteAs usual Siri has explained perfectly what is wrong with norwgian food! Danish supermarkets have a much better choice! Yay for Denmark!
Deleteare you going to helsinki? hope you have a very good time! now that it's the design capital, there's always usually something wonderful happening there! if you need tips on any good cafes, etc. just ask! :)
ReplyDeleteYes, helsinki! Tips would be great! Thankyou!
Deletehei lisa! i can recommend a few good things in helsinki:
Deleteto eat a good dinner or lunch, i really recommend tori on fredrikinkatu. http://www.ravintolatori.fi/
almost directly across from tori is brooklyn cafe, an american cafe run by two girls from new york. they have delicious (american!) cookies, brownies, and muffins! the address is fredrikinkatu 19, although i'm pretty sure they don't have a website.
also, moko cafe on perämiehenkatu has really nice lunch salads and a GREAT saturday brunch, it's also a cute vintage shop, although a bit overpriced in my opinion. http://www.moko.fi/en (while you're in that area, head into the eira neighbourhood to see the beautiful houses and head into kaivopuisto and the sea!)
design forum on erottaja carries a lot of major finnish design brands, and with kakku galleria (cake gallery) in it, it's practically heaven! http://www.designforum.fi/shop_en http://www.kakkugalleria.com/site/index.php?page=yhteystidot
i like pino on fredrikinkatu as well, it's a cute shop with brands like kauniste and also lots of mt washi tape products. http://www.pino.fi/
make sure to go to ateneum to see the helene schjerfbeck exhibition! http://www.ateneum.fi/default.asp?docId=12532
marimekko also has some great helsinki recommendations here: http://www.marimekko.com/village/#filter=*&openItem=marimekko-map-of-helsinki
hope this helped some! enjoy helsinki, it's lovely in the summer!
Wow! Thanks Jenna! Thats quite a list. Thanks for talking the time to give so many great tips!
DeleteI love that carpet...it's from Ikea, right? I've never seen it there. When did they sell it?!
ReplyDeleteSounds nice to escape for a little bit, though, we've had some sunny days here. Hopefully there will be plenty more of them from here on out ;)
Yes, from ikea, about 5 years ago. I bought this one at a loppemarked for 20 kr though! I had it before but spilled coffee on it so I was thrilled to find it again!
DeleteI hope you get some sun too! God sommer!
Aaaw! I always miss london this time of the year too...! Come visit us! Its way too hot and the food def ia noyhing like the nordic kind! Siestas and beaches and gazpacho... Think about it! In the meantime, can we skype? Ita been waaay too long! (im on (extended) holidays so around at random times too! Big love xxxx
ReplyDeleteHey weeeeema,
DeleteOh a holiday to your hot island sound like a dream come true right now!
Yes, we are due a long skype session. Im away for two weeks now but as soon as I get back we will have a good old natter! Big love. Xx
Your homemade food looks lovely. I think good food is central to quality of life. Ever considered starting a small food import business on the side? Maybe there are other foreigners in Norway who crave home food.
ReplyDeleteIts a great idea but Norway charges insane toll prices to import anything so Id have to sell things at a really high price in order to make it work!
Deletelove how honest you are! the rain is getting everyone down here too. blluuuuuueeeeggghhh. x
ReplyDeleteOh, im always honest! I hope we all get some sun very soon! X
