Sunday

Ah, Sunday. The day in Norway where nothing is open apart from 7/11 and garden centres. The government here think it's fine to shop for plants on a Sunday but nothing else. Sundays are for walking in the mountains. Enjoying the best thing that Norway has to offer, beautiful scenery.
But man cannot live on beautiful scenery alone!
I'm looking forward to next year when hopefully Norway will have a new government that will drag this backward country kicking and screaming into the 21st century!

  1. but what is so backward about having one day were everything is more or less quiet?! Don't think the 24/7 shopping world that Britain has is really needed. I love my quiet and shopping free German sunday walking through parks and forests.

  2. Its backward to me cause I have lived with Sunday opening since I was 16 years old. Its normal to me. I just want a choice. So what if all the shops are open? People can still walk through parks and forests and enjoy themselves, and the people who want to shop can also shop. Best of both worlds ;)

  3. but it's more or less only normal in the UK. If you, like me, live in town center it means a big difference - sundays I can have the windows open and it's quiet, I can find a space to park, I can meet up with anyone I want as no one is work...I'm by no means a church person but in that point I agree with them :-)

  4. I'm with germangreeneyedmonster on this one, for the same reasons, but also because Sunday closure would allow traders time off to spend with their own family and friends. Like you, I've got used to Sunday trading and would need time to adjust, but once I did I'm sure our society would be all the more relaxed for it. It would offer the perfect excuse for us to slow down, listen to music, read a book, get together, cook, eat, drink ...

    1. Some Sundays I have no problems with Sunday closing. Its nice to see family and friends or relax at home. I just want a choice. Im from a country with choice and I hate that I have had my freedom of choice taken away from me. Last weekend we were in Gøteborg and it was a normal lively Sunday. People who wanted to shop did, and people were also relaxing and enjoying Gøteborgs beautiful Slottsparken. I'd just like to have a choice......

  5. Also not everyone has the opportunity to shop on other days. My daughter is at school all week and with her Dad on a saturday so I am glad we have the choice here in the UK.

  6. I completely agree on this as i am also coming from a country where shops are open on Sundays, even opening hours are longer in the weekends. I have to do my shopping on Saturday here and even then they all close at 6pm!People of course should relax, spend time with family etc. but if i am not one of them? if i want to have more choices? do i have to leave this country then? is it the only option?

    1. Again it all comes down to having a choice. I decide when I want to see family/ friends/ relax etc but also have the choice to pop into Ikea etc if I have the need! At least I can pop over the border to Sweden for a bit if Sunday retail therapy every now and then!

  7. I look forward to December - when shops are allowed to stay open on Sundays to make sure we all spend more money on Christmas shopping... :-)
